El nom està relacionat amb el funcionament d'aquest quiosc digital. L'usuari selecciona el programari lliure que desitja i introdueix un CD o un DVD verge, el qual li és retornat amb el programari seleccionat gravat. No només es poden gravar còpies d'Ubuntu sinó que es poden gravar també les distribucions Mandriva, Fedora Core, SuSE, Gentoo, etc., o reculls com l'OpenCD, el paquet OpenOffice.org, etc.

El projecte va nèixer amb l'objectiu de proporcionar un accés fàcil al programari en llocs en vies de desenvolupament, amb un accés a Internet complicat o inexistent. Al web de la Freedom Toaster de Sudàfrica es  pot veure fins i tot com es pot construir la pròpia Freedom Roaster.
